Chesham a ‘must visit’ place?

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

‘The Chesham Community Vision has identified that there is a great opportunity for Chesham to make money out of tourism, to put Chesham on the map as a “must visit” place.’

They will have to address the rickety railway, high parking charges and congestion on all roads into town first. And that’s just the first attempt at a list.

Mr. Muscle Oven Cleaner Aerosol

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Our wholesaler has discontinued this product. While this is no guarantee that the manufacturer has done so, the fact that this is a popular product would suggest that it has.

We have been selling a lot of the three Kleen-Off products: a liquid in a squeeze bottle, oven pads and an aerosol. The old Kleen-Off oven cleaner in the metal tin was discontinued some time ago at the behest of our beloved European Union. They said it was too strong. i.e. it worked! There are also good products from Astonish and Hagesan.

Water Leak, Red Lion Street (Oh dear!)

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

Well the repair on Sunday lasted a day. Now the road surface is collapsing as well. Will it ever end?

The thing which should annoy us all is that, by hook or by crook, we are the ones paying for this shambles.

We are still old fashioned enough to sell loose paraffin despite persistent attempts by Customs & Excise to discourage such sales. I guess the red tape is part of their job-creation scheme.

Bring in your container and we will fill it up for you. From a weight point of view, we cannot accepts a container of more than 25 litre capacity. From a red-tape point of view, we do not make individual sales of more than 100 litres. We think selling loose paraffin makes environmental sense because it reduces the number of 4 litre plastic bottles which would only be thrown away.

We also sell plastic containers from 2 to 25 litres to start you off.

McDonald’s closing in Chesham, Good news/Bad news?

Monday, March 13th, 2006

McDonald’s is closing in Chesham at the end of the month. I can’t admit to being a great fan myself although our kids never missed the opportunity when offered.

Chesham certainly does not need another empty shop and a big one at that. I’ll be sorry to see them go.

Water Leak, Red Lion Street (update)

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Well that will teach me to open my mouth. There has been yet another attempt over the weekend to repair the leak and all is, at the moment, dry.

There is no truth in the rumour that Done Bookmakers have opened a book on how long it will take to start leaking again.

I once worked for a boss in the mining industry whose favourite saying was: ‘Do it once, and do it well’.

Cardinal Red Tile Polish

Sunday, March 12th, 2006

Customers still ask for Cardinal Red. Both the wax and liquid versions were discontinued sometime ago in the U.K. There is a good replacement for both from Tableau. Not surprisingly it is called Tableau Red Tile Polish!

The paste is priced at £5.55 per 250g tin and the liquid at £4.65 for 300ml. As with the original Cardinal, the liquid is a brighter red than the paste.

Water Leak, Red Lion Street (yawn)

Sunday, March 12th, 2006

Putting men on the moon is easy-peasy. Our cars have computers that dole out petrol by the teaspoon. We can take a photo of Katie’s birthday and email it to Aunt Mabel in New Zealand in a flash.

But we can’t muster the engineering skills to fix a water leak outside the Bulldog newsagent.

It’s about as pathetic as the previous Town Clerk cheerfully admitting that he didn’t have a clue how to organise the repair of the Market Square clock.

Saturday, March 11th, 2006

The Pearces Hardware website has moved to and we will using this site to host a weblog. We hope to include information about Pearces itself, Chesham and indeed the world at large!
